Getting Started

Before you start your driving lessons Before you can start your driving lessons you need to have a provisional driving licence. Therefore, if you do not have one you will need to apply for one from the DVLA.

You can obtain a provisional driving licence application form by visiting your local post office or applying online.

You can apply for your provisional car driving licence up to three months before your seventeenth birthday (however, it would not become valid until you were seventeen).

Although you can start your driving lessons as soon as your provisional driving licence becomes valid, you cannot book the driving test until you have passed the theory test.

You should be able to book your theory test with a few days notice and receive your test results on the day of the test. You can book your theory test to take place on or shortly after your seventeenth birthday provided you have a provisional driving licence.

The waiting time for a driving test is typically 6 -10 weeks. Sooner dates are usually available through test appointment cancellations.

Provided you have a valid provisional driving licence you can start your driving lessons before you take your theory test. Thus, combining your theory study with the early part of your driving course. This gives you the added advantage of being able to consult your instructor on various matters relating to the theory test and your theory study.

Once you had passed your theory test your instructor could book your driving test and schedule the remaining part of your driving lessons. From the above you can see that learning to drive can be achieved quickly.

However, it is important to book your course in advance to ensure you get the desired lessons and test dates. Our staff can advise and assist you in choosing the right training course.

How many driving lessons will I need?

Everyone is different and will need a different number of driving lessons. Other relevant factors may include whether you’ve ridden a motorbike and whether you will get practice in your own car in addition to your lessons.

Most driving Instructors agree that for most people it is between 1 & 2 lessons per year of your life. So a 20 year old could take between 20 & 40 lessons. Remember, it’s not just being able to control the car, but also about gaining experience in different situations.

Also there is a basic syllabus of lessons that all Instructors teach that needs to be fully covered by everyone. It is unrealistic to expect to cover the syllabus in less than 20 lessons.

The DSA are concerned that many candidates have not had enough lessons before taking the test. Their statistics show that the average is 45 lessons + lots of private practice.
